Reasons to integrate warm water to your morning routine according to Ayurveda!
Warm water holds a very significant place in Ayurveda, Ayurveda emphasizes balance in the body.
Drinking warm water is believed to promote overall well-being. Some key reasons why warm water is valued in Ayurveda are:
How it aids digestion warm water is thought to boost Agni (Digestive Fire) in the stomach (pachaka); digestive enzymes (ranjaka) in the liver, and to stimulate digestion by promoting the efficient breakdown of food and nutrients while also hydrating and cleansing the digestive tract. It also boosts the quality of ahara rasa, which is the first nutrient fluid in the digestive tract. It also facilitates removing and melting toxic waste coating (ama).
It helps in the digestion process and can relieve issues like indigestion and bloating. In Ayurvedic medicine warm water is used classically for hydration, cleansing and rejuvenating therapies this practice is called garam pani.
It also helps with detoxification. Ayurveda suggests that warm water aids in flushing out toxins from the body. It is believed to cleanse the digestive system and support the body's natural detoxification mechanisms as well as balancing the Doshas. According to Ayurveda, the body is composed of three doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Drinking warm water is considered to balance these doshas, contributing to overall harmony in the body.
Because it is thought to enhance the process of breaking down nutrients to absorbing them efficiently, another reason to drink warm water is that it helps to boost metabolism, which can aid in weight management.
One of the most beneficial reasons to drinking warm water is that it helps calms the nervous system, Ayurvedic teachings often suggest that warm water has a soothing effect on the nervous system. It may help reduce stress and anxiety, promoting a sense of calmness as well as enhances circulation. It is considered beneficial for blood circulation. It may help dilate blood vessels, improving blood flow.
In my studies I have heard educators and clinicians mention about how warm water hydrates more effectively—while cold water may shock the system, warm water is gentler and is believed to be better absorbed by the body, ensuring efficient hydration.
Another claim that some individuals have made is that it alleviates joint pain. Ayurveda often associates warm water with reducing stiffness and discomfort in the joints. It is thought to have a lubricating effect, providing relief to those with joint issues.
One of the ways that I love to recommend to take warm water is to take it on an empty stomach on a squat position. This allows the downregulation of movement in the digestive tract and boosts the downward energy (Apana) helping the process of elimination to be easier and more effective, the reason of taking it on a Squat is because squatting is believed to help with digestion—as the pelvis descends, you encourage the downward flowing energy (apana vayu), which in some yoga traditions, helps the body eliminate waste and clear the mind.
Adding a quarter to half a lemon to your warm water in the mornings can not only help with elimination but also tonify your digestion for the day ahead.
Incorporating warm water into your daily routine aligns with Ayurvedic medicine principles, promoting balance, and supporting various bodily functions.
